What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a chronic condition where the body cannot properly regulate blood sugar, medically known as glucose. This malfunction chronically affects how the body uses glucose, which is the primary source of energy for your cells. When glucose levels remain too high over time, and if left unmanaged, it can damage multiple organs and systems throughout your body.
What is glucose and how does it work?
Glucose is a type of sugar that comes from the foods we eat – especially carbohydrates. After eating, glucose enters the bloodstream and is transported to cells to be used as energy.
Insulin is the hormone produced by the pancreas, which acts like a key that allows glucose to move from the bloodstream into cells and keeps blood sugar levels within a healthy range. When your insulin levels are not in the right range, it can cause different malfunctions in your body. These malfunctions show up as two types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2.
What are type 1 and type 2 diabetes
Type 1 – The body produces little or no insulin

This type of diabetes is an autoimmune condition, which means your body is attacking itself. Often, patients are diagnosed with this early on in life and it has little or nothing to do with their lifestyle choices. Type 1 diabetes does however require lifelong insulin therapy

Type 2 – The body becomes resistant to insulin and cannot use it effectively

Risks to consider with diabetes
Unfortunately, uncontrolled diabetes can lead to several long-term issues in your body. The primary issues caused by diabetes are:
- Heart diseases & stroke
- This is because high glucose damages blood vessel walls, accelerating plaque buildup and increasing the risk of poor circulation
- Kidney disease
- This is because your kidneys filter waste from your blood. High sugar strains this filtering process, leading to protein leaking in your urine, causing the kidneys to progressively work harder and ultimately increasing the risks of kidney failure
- Never damage & foot ulcers
- This is because excess glucose damages small nerves, especially in the feet and hands, where your nerves are predominantly small. Patients often experience this through numbness or tingling, burning or pain, and loss of sensation in their hands and feet
- Vision loss (Retinopathy)
- This is because blood sugar weakens tiny blood vessels in the retina, which constricts the blood flow, which can lead to bleeding in the eye or increase the risk of vision loss entirely
- Infection and slow wound healing
- This is because damaged blood vessels reduce oxygen and nutrient delivery to your cells. This further results in slow wound healing, increases the risk of infections, and often surfaces in foot ulcers that can lead to amputations in the worst case scenarios
All of these risks increase with age, duration of diabetes, poor glucose control, and other conditions that often accompany diabetes, like high blood pressure.
